10 American Burger Brands That Are Worth Chowing Down On

Hamburgers are probably synonymous with American dining culture. In fact, the US has single-handedly made fast food a thing all over the world. Now everyone knows the whole burger-fries-soft drink combo as well as they know their favorite local delicacy.

However, which American fast food burgers are the best? American themselves seem find these brands the best, according to a report by Fox News. These burgers are based on a 2017 poll, and are listed here in no particular order.

1. Shake Shack

Shake Shack is an East Coast fast food chain that originated from a single hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, New York City. Since then, New Yorkers and their neighbors have been lapping up the burgers from this brand. They boast 100% Angus beef patties, and diners seem to particularly love their cheesy fries.

On any given day, the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park will have a long line of hungry patrons waiting, even on the coldest of days. Apart from their cheeseburgers, they also have chicken burgers and great shakes. For vegetarians, there’s the fried Portobello mushroom burger that’s stuffed with cheese.

2. Wendy’s

Wholesome comfort food is what Wendy’s does best. They’re also known for their delicious and warm chilies, a stew made of tomatoes and minced beef. Diners can opt to have their burgers with a cup of this beef stew, instead of fries. Another signature feature of Wendy’s is their perfectly square patties of beef. These can be layered high and there’s even a cheese burger with three beef patties.

3. Culver’s

Culver’s signature is their butterburgers, which contain beef patties that smashed on the grill while being cooked. They use all American Midwest beef in their burgers, and are not afraid to show it. Apart from their burgers, they’re known for their custards, a frozen dessert that looks quite similar to ice cream. It’s supposed to be very light and airy.

There is a variety of buns for their customers apart from the usual one, which includes sourdough bread and gluten free versions.

4. Whataburger

Whataburger is a fast food chain that operates out of San Antonio, Texas. The first Whataburger store was opened in 1950 and now there are more than 300 Whataburger stores all over the U.S. Their main products are the namesake Whataburger and the Whatachick’n.

One of the things that keep Whataburger relevant is their constant updating of the menu with new products that appeal to the younger generation. One example of this is of course their Avocado Burger series,as well as their limited edition burgers that appear from time to time.

5. Steak n’ Shake

Steak n’ Shake is an American fast food chain found in the south and midwest. Just like their name implies, they’re known for their juicy steak burgers. There are plenty of steak burgers to choose from, including those paired with bacon, garlic, guacamole and spicy chipotle.

There are also some really great shakes here to go with your burgers, including collaborations with famous dessert brands like nutella, Peanut Butter Cup, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes and Oreos.

6. SONIC Drive-in

SONIC is the one fast food restaurant on this list that has THE most interesting dining concept. They primarily serve drive in customers, meaning that you stay in your car the whole time. All you need to do is park your car in spaces provided, order via an order booth beside you and your meal is delivered to you by a car hop.

Car hops are servers who wears skates and rolls over to your car with a tray in hand.SONIC car hops are one of the things that SONIC is known for and very proud of. There are some outdoor seats provided, but most customers stay in their cars or take the food away.

7. Smashburger

Smashburger got its name from the way their beef patties are cooked. They’re literally smashed into the grill in order to release their juices and this is what patrons swear by. Smashburgers construct their burgers almost like gourmet artisanal burgers.

Each burger has a ton of ingredients piled on. For example, their Avocado Club has mayo, lettuce, tomato, fresh avocado, bacon, ranch dressing and a smashburger patty. There are also several types of buns available like egg buns, chipotle buns and multi-grain buns.

8. McDonald’s

McDonald’s is the world’s largest fast food chain with almost 35,000 restaurants in 119 countries. No matter where in the world they are, everyone loves their Big Mac, Fish fillets and chicken nuggets. McDonald’s introduces country specific burgers in various parts of the world like the McAloo Tikki in India and Teriyaki McBurger in Japan.

Many McD fans however, love their fries which are best eaten fresh. They’re crunchy, sufficiently salty and just sooo good.

9.  In-N-Out

The first In-N-Out burger joint was opened in the 1940s. It’s the pride and joy of the US Pacific Southwest. In-N-Out has been voted America’s best burger brand for several years and was only dethroned in 2017. One of its bestsellers is the Double Double Cheeseburger and their cheese fries.

In-N-Out’s main pull are their amazing ‘secret menu’ items that you’ll have to specially request for  as they’re not published on the counter.

10. Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Five Guys is the brand that managed to knock In-N-Out from the top post in 2017, and looking at pictures of their burgers, you can see why. All their burgers are hand crafted and their fried are cut in-house with their jackets still on. Served in aluminium wrappings, their burgers have a distinct home made feel. It comes out all messy and gooey with melted cheese all over the place, but this is what makes diners go crazy.

You can’t go wrong with a meal of burgers and fries. Almost all the brands listed above ( except for McDonald’s and Wendy’s) have not made it outside the United States. Here’s hoping they reach more shores soon so we don’t have to travel there to enjoy all these delicious burgers.
