“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourselves” – Andy Warhol
Life is not all rainbows and butterflies. We have all had our downfalls and dark times. It is in these moments that we truly learn to either make it or break it. We cannot just back down and give up on life. Always remember that in life, change is the only constant.
When I first quit my job to join the digital nomad world, I went into depression while in transition. Spent days and nights contemplating on my life choice. Constantly wondering if I will make it out alive and successful.
My depression was due to my initial self-confidence of being a hard worker. Never had an issue working my ass off anyway. Also, I thought I was living the dream. My dream to travel the world and always be on holiday.
However, I certainly did not predict the lack of work and shortage of money as I stumbled upon one mishap after another. That includes the pain of losing a close kin, heated arguments with my partner and having both our cards defrauded while travelling.
Here are some quotes that helped me through my darkest days and I sincerely hope that it would help brighten your day too:
“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
If you choose to get out of your comfort zone, be ready to be lost, anxious and frustrated. Resilience is key when you lose sight. It is the keystone to your success.
My world tumbled down quicker than expected. I went straight into depression and self-loathing. Having to be in a good corporate job to earning almost nothing broke me. It took me a month before I understand that this is a brand new change in my life that I have to embrace.
“If you run you stand a chance of losing, but if you don’t run you’ve already lost.” – Barack Obama
Ask yourself how can you win if you don’t do anything to win? This is the same thing as making a change. Sometimes things happen and we cannot always be in control especially when it comes to death. However, we can learn to look into what we can do to make things better.
Come out with ideas and plans to make things better. Listing my strengths, weaknesses and opportunities helped me in building my next step in life. It helps to refocus on what I am good at rather than how the whole world has turned its back on me.
Another saying for this would be:
“The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried” – Stephen Mcranie
I keep trying and trying till I finally found a proper writing gig. Someone told me that I have no prior experience in being an author and will not make it. If I took that person’s words in, I would have still been in a depression today.
“It’s not what you are that holds you back, it’s what you think you are not.” – Denis Waitley
Things will never change if we sit and do nothing to improve it. Our mindset is what will help us to be who we want to be.
We can sit, roll around, cry and moan about how bad life is but will that change how things are? The answer is a clear NO. At the end of the day, it is still you who decides what is your next step. That’s a fact no matter how we look at it.
Do you think that at the stage of 60 years old you will be able to kitesurf? Sounds ridiculous? Well, Richard Branson broke the world record when he kite surf with 3 ladies clung on to him in 2014.He was 64.
“You must be the change you want to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi
Again, change starts with you. The only expectation that we can have is on ourselves and not on how others will be or do.
You do have the greatest power to make things different for yourself. No one else but you.
“Some people want it to happen, some people wish it would happen. Others makes it happen” – Michael Jordan
I am fully aware that it is easier said than done. Nothing in life that is worth it is going to be easy. If it is so easy to achieve, it is probably not worth to be called an achievement.
Go beyond the greatest distance, brave through fire and hell. If you want to make it happen, you will need to persevere no matter how hard things become. Giving up is not in your dictionary until you have tried all avenues.
Have you read about the real “Iron Man” named Elon Musk? He is one of the best examples of this matter. Musk went from being bullied in school to being the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, founder of The Boring Company, and co-founder of OpenAI.
Note to self
Be grateful for all that has happened including the bad and the good. Change is the only constant in life and yet, humans tend to reject change in themselves. I will someday succeed in life if I can learn to adapt and accept change. Slowly but surely, I will progress into who I want to be. From there, I shall look for new goals to accomplish and be the best version of myself. Life is indeed a learning process.
